Samsung EX1 Semi-pro Compact Camera with 10MP Sensor

Samsung EX1 Smart Camera Review

Samsung EX1 Camera is an advanced point-and-shoot camera that is designed especially for those serious photographers who are looking for combination of compact design and advanced features in a single device.

Samsung EX1 camera, also named Samsung TL500, can be called a device made on the footsteps of Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX3 but definitely the former is going to give tougher competition to Panasonic’s 2010 point-and-shoot release.

Design

The new compact camera Samsung EX1 is a solid construction and gives a look of a metal block on the first glance. Even the scroll wheels, lens barrel, buttons, and the unique external hot shoe flash look so tough and resilient.

On the front of the camera, brushed metal texture adds to the sophistication of the camera and ensure better grip of the camera. The lens comes with a big barrel which occupies more than half of the front but don’t worry, you can still hold the camera as it comes with ample space on its rubberized construction.

On the top of the camera, you will find all the shooting modes and controls are instilled in a typical camera design. Just above that there’s a pop up flash similar to Panasonic Lumix LX3. The inclusion of Physical controls is an advantage in the camera as you don’t need to enter menu every time in a hustle bustle of changing options.

There’s a dedicated video recording button on the back panel alongside LCD with other functions. There’s a front dial located on the front just above the lens barrel which can be used for switching modes for navigating menus or during manual shooting.

Features

Samsung EX1 Camera is a 10 Megapixel Compact device which features bright f/1.8 lens and large 1/1.7” CCD sensor. The lens supports 3x focal range varying from 24mm to 72mm and for supporting your low light photography, the lens comes with an external flash hot shoe which pops us as and when required.

The Camera offers shutter speed of range 16-1/1500 seconds which cannot be called exceptional and also not as good as in Panasonic LX3. The aperture range starts from f6.9 and goes up to f1.8.

One of the standout features of Samsung EX1 camera is its rear screen which gives you efficient contrast than LCD screens. The Screen is 3 inch swiveling AMOLED Screen which is a fully enunciated screen and displays the images in the best possible quality for previewing.

The camera doesn’t offer lot in terms of customizing buttons. With Manual Exposure mode, the scroll wheel allows controlling shutter speed with front dial for making adjustment; same happens with Aperture settings.

In comparison to Panasonic Lumix LX3 which offers 1/1.63 inch image sensor, Samsung is bit lower with 1/1.7 inch image sensor. However, this value doesn’t make much of the difference in the image quality.

The EX1 camera comes with an exclusive RAW format support which is definitely a win-win situation for the camera in the point-and-shoot market. You can select RAW shoot option or can go ahead with RAW with any of the three JPEG quality modes.
