AMD Unveils 2nd Gen APU’s Codename Trinity
AMD unveiled their second generation Accelerated Processing Units for Notebooks, Ultrabooks, Normal PC’s and All-in-one desktops. The new APUs, Codenamed “Trinity”, were improvement from ground-up over the first generation accomplishing double performance per wattage.
AMD’s Trinity will not directly compete with Ivy Bridge, as it was not designed for the performance segment. Trinity was made to target the mobile market where features, low power usage, and integrated graphics are the standard. It will present an useful alternative for ultrabooks and Budget Desktops.
The new Trinity architecture features AMD Piledriver CPU core using 3rd generation Turbo Core technology which adjusts power between CPU and GPU according to the needs. This technology helps boosting the CPU core clock to 3.2GHz. It also boasts a DDR3 dual channel memory controller, AMD HD Media Accelerator, unified northbridgeand four CPU cores with 2MB L2 cache each.
This APU has Radeon HD 7000 inbuilt graphics which provides more than 56 percent improved performance over the previous generation. Acoording to AMD, Laptops featuring these APUs will have a battery life of up to 12 hours.
AMD Trinity APU models released for Normal notebooks -
- A10-4600M
- A8-4500M
- A6-4400M
These all have a 35W TDP, varying in CPU cores and clocking.
A10-4655M quad-core @ 2.0GHz with a 25W TDP and A6-4455M dual-core @ 2.1GHz with 17W TDP are designed for Ultrabooks.
The trinity APU’s for Desktops will be available around mid 2012.
